My dogs do NOT live in the New Normal. They have set routines that they refuse to change unless disaster hits them. They expect things at specific times: being fed, treats, going outside, romping, running, and hearth time (laying on the rug in front of the TV and/or fire). They know the exact times of day that these activities should occur and are obnoxiously persistent if the timelines are not met. They are the best at resisting change.
We are the same way. Digging our heels in and resisting change. We think we are comfortable if everything just stays the same. Life whirls around us, but we are safe in our cocoon. We don’t grow because we refuse to change.
Well, change is inevitable. Technology changes at lightning speed. Pandemics create the necessity for adaptation. The earth’s dynamics happen whether we want them to or not. Or, its emergencies and the health of those around us are constantly changing. Change is happening whether we want it to or not. It becomes necessary to adjust to that New Normal or be lost in its wake.
Growth is another story. While change is everywhere, growth within the change is optional. If we don’t grow with change, many times we become shut down by that very change. For example, analog vs. digital TV or landlines vs. cell phones or upgrading your technology to make things easier and faster.
One of my dogs had to change after a life-threatening event. He had to learn to eat at different times and eat different amounts. His types and amounts of treats changed. He was unhappy to say the least, persistently demanding the old normal. With help and consistency over time, he learned to adapt and grow with his New Normal.
Are we happy without growing in our changing lives? Can we really refuse to grow with the changes around and not have our lives compromised? Can we function to the best of our abilities and not have to adjust to change? Are we fooling ourselves in our refusal to adapt? If we have to grow with our changes are we always alone to do so?
If change is inevitable is growth really optional? What do you think? I welcome your comments. Please keep them shared in a positive way.
